VITA Tax Preparer

The Coalition operates under the IRS’s VITA program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). Tax preparers provide free tax preparation assistance to Cuyahoga County taxpayers whose income is below $60,000. The service provided creates a path from financial uncertainty to financial security for the 10,000+ people we serve every year. In order to ensure our tax services remain free and accessible, we are powered and operated with the help of volunteers like you!

This position requires completing tax interviews with clients and preparing a basic tax return at any of our 15 local tax sites in the Cleveland area. Absolutely no experience or previous tax law knowledge is required. All of our volunteers will become officially IRS certified to prepare taxes for the VITA program through one of our trainings. Additionally, new volunteers will receive mentorship and training from an experienced volunteer. *There are opportunities to gain more knowledge of tax preparation through free advanced courses and our vast network of community partners.

The Volunteer Tax Preparer will be an in-person opportunity, however there is likely to be a virtual option available depending on the need. The Coalition allows volunteers to self-schedule and choose location of interest. There are also additional opportunities to volunteer in other capacities, such as: Greeter/Intake Specialist, Brand Ambassadors, and Site Coordinators.

Outside of the personal direct benefit of being a volunteer, the Coalition also rewards volunteers in many ways through incentives, award recognition, and much more!

There are many VITA tax sites across Cuyahoga County in need of volunteers, with at least one site being open every day of the week and shifts being at minimum 2 hours. Trainings are both in-person and virtual. Go to refundohio.org to learn more and sign up to get involved.
