Computer Lab / Jobs Mentor
Assist residents in their search for employment through working one-on-one with residents. The process includes listening to individual’s skills and background to craft resumes and cover letters. Online search in the shelter’s computer lab and coaching in interview skills may be components of the position. This may entail instruction in basic computer literacy, one-on-one or in group settings. Includes time of monitoring the lab as residents use computers to connect with Facebook, surfing the web, and emailing – viewed as healthy connection with community beyond the shelter.
Duties/Tasks:
- Listen with residents to get a sense of their interests and employment background
- Coach participants in demonstrating a positive and appropriate work attitude
- Identify possible directions for jobs
- Assist with resumes, computer literacy
Assistance would not entail dealing with sensitive client information which would be handled through client’s caseworker.
Preferred skills, background/experience:
- Ability to teach appropriate work skills, attitudes and behaviors, as well as computer skills
- Volunteer has patience, understanding and enthusiasm for interacting with shelter residents
